Today we did the 16th and final Chen Taiji Spear seminar of the year. GM Tse held a lecture on the 8 Jin and the corresponding 8 Gua. In addition, he explained that each situation is also associated with a movement. Similarly to the 8 Jin and Gua, the movements appear in pairs of opposites. I have listed the Jin and the corresponding movements below:

  • Peng – Kai (opening)
  • Lu – He (closing)
  • Ji – Shang (up)
  • An – Xia (down)
  • Cai – Shun (circling out)
  • Lie – Ni (circling in)
  • Zhou – Jin (forwards)
  • Kao – Tui (backwards)
Following the lecture, GM Tse demonstrated the parts of the form that we have learned so far, splitting it up into several smaller sections and allowing us to polish in groups in between. At the end of the seminar, time was left over for the students to be tested on the form by GM Tse. This ensured that everyone had a good understanding of the current sections before we learn the next part in the new year. Looking forward to continuing the form soon!

A very enjoyable Chen spear seminar, it’s quite a complicated form with lots of spinning, so it was great to review it, thank you Sifu Peter A

I really enjoyed the Chen Spear seminar today. It really helps to remember the sequence that we go through the various sections so many times together, and that we are tested individually. I’m looking forward to next time! Thank you Sigong. Peter Hogg

More connections drawn to the Bagua – the puzzle grows bigger!
Looking forward to continuing the form next year.
Thank you, Sigong.

Chen Taiji Spear is a complex form that requires a lot of coordination and understanding. I can see how easily some parts can get confusing so it was great that Sifu taught it in parts that were very straightforward. Every time, I learn a little bit more and I can recall it better. Looking forward to better understand the form and to be able to practice it with the same energy as I see. Thank you Sifu!

The Chen Spear is quite a complicated form, with many direction changes and spinning which are similar but subtly different. It is quite something that we all managed to pick it up well enough in on-line seminars! Looking forward to learning some more. Thank you Sigong. Christine
