Chun Instructor Course 2025

Chun Yuen Quan is a truly unique skill. Beyond its benefits and its martial applications, it is unique because Sifu brought it to us from Wu Sigong.
The skill teaches us not only the correct postures, energy and attitude but also it gives us something more; a fighting spirit. In every form of Chun Yuen Quan we can see the fighting spirit and the right martial art attitude to carry forward with us as we practice the forms and truly master them.

For this year’s Chun Yuen Quan Instructor Course, I could see in detail the entire course and have learned a lot by seeing so many forms and a lot of questions and corrections as well as the hard work of organizing.

The course began with an introduction from Sifu who reminded us again about the skill, its meaning and value. Also, Sifu pointed out that it’s not about whether we pass the forms but for all of us to improve our knowledge and our skills. Afterwards, we split up into groups for the questions. Some of them were difficult, others easier but, in the end, everyone managed to pass them by the next morning. One thing that Moy Sihing said resonated with me; that 50% or 60% of the knowledge should be with us always and the rest we can revise in preparation for the course. This I understand as well because each year I try to absorb more and more of the knowledge so that I don’t even have to think about it but for it to become part of me and my practice. In time, I hope to embody all of this knowledge, as I believe we all do.

After the questions, Sifu demonstrated parts of each form, in order. We then split into groups and started polishing the parts that we needed to improve. I appreciate all the senior students who helped us in the separate zoom rooms by giving us more and more detail of the form and the right corrections to help us with our posture, energy and movements.

This year, I was testing Xing Shou, the first form of the Chun Yuen Quan syllabus, both the Basic and Original. In previous year, I had passed Xing Shou Basic at the instructor course but not the Original. I have seen the original form many times in class as Sifu demonstrated it and, of course, I had passed it before in class but I was still unsure of my jump kicks. Still, I had improved from previous years and I looked forward to learning more and becoming better this time as well.

After each part demonstrated by Sifu for all the forms, we split again into groups to polish them until the end of the first day. I especially enjoyed seeing the sword and staff warm-ups as I had not done them for some time so it was good to revise them and ask any questions we had. With the first day done, we rested in preparation for the tests the following day.

In previous years, I had been nervous for the test and really wanted to get it right but, over time, this has faded as I realized that all we can do is prepare in advance, so that the form becomes part of us through repetition and correct movement and energy. What I found pleasantly surprising is that, over the last 5 years, as I have practiced Chun Yuen Quan forms, my body has slowly become more agile. In my particular case, I find this to be amazing. Only 7 years ago, I had injuries in both knees, the spine and generally could not perform the types of jumps that I can now. I have healed my injuries over this time with the Centre skills, but it was Chun Yuen Quan that pushed me to do more and open up the body more, exercise each part day by day until my body became stronger and I could use my Qi more effectively and could move my body with more intent and purpose than ever before. I am very happy with my result for this year as I could only dream before of having the level of control and ability to move as I do now.

With each test and with every correction, we gain new knowledge of what to work on and what to pay attention to. I appreciate the testers and their patience with us and their willingness to help us improve ourselves and to bring us up to standard with how the forms should be practiced.

After the tests, we gathered for the answers to questions. I very much enjoy this section of the course as I get to hear the answers as they should be and with more detail and explanation. I especially liked the demonstration of applications as I could take part in it and really feel and see for myself the applications from the forms, especially useful to visualize them as I think about the forms.

At the end of the course, Sifu addressed again the students and congratulated us for improving our skills in the forms and our knowledge. It is always useful to go back again to the knowledge and apply all that we have learned so far in how we practice and carry on the skill and how to improve ourselves.

I would like to thank Sifu and Moy Sihing and all senior students for another great instructor course and for keeping us on the right path of learning and of our common goal of carrying forward our Chun Yuen Quan skill.

It was a great Chun Yuen instructor course again this year! As always, it is amazing to see Sigong perform all the forms and be able to ask any and all questions and then work on those points in the polishing sessions. There is always more understanding to be gleaned and improvements to be made. A big thank you to Sigong, Moy Siba and all the testers and polishers for making it a fantastic experience! Best, Tom Hogg.

Fantastic Chun Yuen instructor course- great to see the polishing and detail from Sigong and the senior instructors and to see everyone. Also appreciate revising more of the Shaolin skill history and how we pass it on within the Tse Centre . Thanks! Kay

For me, instructors course is always a foundational experience; building and extending existing skills, and the delight in discovering new skills and new insights. This year was no exception.
Many thanks for the demonstrations from Tai Sigong, for sharing his skill and knowledge with us, and also for all those who organised the course to ensure that everything ran smoothly. Thanks also for all the testers and polishers, for their care and patience in helping us and guiding us. It was great to see old friends and new. Best wishes to all! Allistair Lomax.

The importance of the human skill in the centre as to how to be with a group and to be part and help out was nicely emphasized by Sigong. The questions section seemed even tougher this year but good to keep us sharp and learn more. The demonstrations were clear as always and great to get questions answered. Practicing and noticing and working on details was great and helped me improve. Thank you Sigong, Sifu, testers and everyone who helped out.  Wouter

A privilege to come and be a part of the skill, to be reminded of how it can help with keeping your body and mind healthy and to not give up. It is always nice to see so many people and connect, to learn more deeply about the skill, way of thinking and corrections in tests. Love it . It is always a joy to watch Sigong demonstrate the forms we are going to test as even though we may know them well there is always more to notice and pick up.

I love how inspiring our instructor courses are and how each year we go through to another level and improve ourselves. This one was so great, so smooth and so enjoyable. It does feel like we’re getting more and more like family, caring for each other and helping each other to do our best. Though gruelling at the time, the questions really do help us to understand more about the scope of our skill and the workings of the Centre. The demonstrations are always wonderful! Thank you so much to all who helped make it happen and to Sigong’s unfailing guidance and kindness. All in all it’s a big treasure.

The Chun Yuen skill is amazing, and being able to refine it, understand it better, pick up new details is really important, and the instructor’s course does that and more. Great seeing every one on the course. Thank you Sigong, Siba Darryl and Siba Mike, and everybody for a very smooth course. Christine

Thank you Sigong, as well as the organisers, testers and polishers for a brilliant instructors course. It really feels like we covered a lot over this very enjoyable weekend. Dear Si Gong, Sifu
Thank you for another really enjoyable Chun Yuen Instructor course, you seem to pick just the right weeks weather wise for this course, it’s been great to be outside. I think everyone is getting used to the question format and we have all been eagerly reading Chun Yuen diaries in preparation. From the demonstrations I saw just the postures I needed and its funny how often someone else asks my question before I do. There must have been a lot of effort and organisation to make this course run so smoothly and be so enjoyable, thanks again.

Dear Sifu
Thank you for an excellent instructors course, it’s always good to come together to practice and especially enjoyed getting a deeper understanding through the questions and realise how much there is to learn, thank you to Darryl and all the testers for helping organise another great course. Peter

A Great Chun Yuen Instructor Course smooth and flowing following the course using the principles of Chun Yuen Quan itself developing our posture the relaxation of how we enjoyed the course moving our bodies our waist and connection between arms and legs and torso a whole body movement which can exhausting but you feel good out of breath but strong because breathing through your nose helps the organs work with the body So thank you Sigong, Siba, Sifu and all the testers for making sure we climb this hill successfully and safely so we can show the next generation why this art is Special, brilliant course. Earl

I feel privileged to be part of the Chun Yuen CHuan Instructor’s course this year. My appreciation and gratitude grows as we polish, uncover more information about history, philosophy and knowledge of these set of skills. 4 aspects I especially gained from: TaiSigong’s demos, polishing sessions on Saturday, the questions in groups, and the testing process itself. I learned so much! and looking forward to continuing learning from Taisigong, Sifu, Sibagong, and all my kung-fu brothers and sisters!   Alisa
