Studying with Sīfú 師父
Part 7
I enjoyed Chī Sau and learning the techniques and what to do if one of my brothers used them on me. Whenever we had a problem and got hit we would ask Sīfú what we should do and he would show us a solution which made it look easy. We were all so impressed by him. My Wing Chun brother Thomas would always get a note book out and write down the answers Sīfú gave us. One day I said to him that if he ever wrote a book about Wing Chun, I would like a cope. He never did, and I have actually written books on Wing Chun and even wrote one together with Sīfú.
In the early days whenever I did Chī Sáu with Sīfú, he would hit me easily. One of the techniques he used was Tāan Sáu 攤手 – Opening Hand. He would move it very quickly, but to the wrong side and still hit my chest. Later I realised that I did not let the other hand and so I could not turn to the right side. It was only after Sīfú had hit me so many times, and he even told me, but it took me while to let go, and so until then I still got hit.
