Blindman

Part 1

I have a student who has studied with me for over 30 years. His name is Martin Gale and he is a remarkable person. Martin is blind. When he first started studying with me, he could see a little bit, but now his eyesight has deteriorated even more to the point where he is almost fully blind. His favourite skill is Wing Chun, but he also studies Qigong, Taijiquan, Chun, Yuen Quan, and Hard Qigong as well. He loves all of the skills but Wing Chun is him. He loves it as it makes him feel secure and confident, and it keeps him healthy. He believes that Wing Chun is the only martial art he can do to a high level because Wing Chun has Chī Sáu 黐手 – Sticking Hands, training and through the touching the hand or any part of the body, he can use his Wing Chun to defend himself. This has happened to him. Once when he was on a bus walking down the aisle, when somebody stopped and tried to push him, but he used his Wing Chun skill and the person he tried to push him lost his balance and fell onto the floor. All the passengers in the bus were amazed at what had happened. That day it was raining and Martin was wearing a big coat and is quite short, they all thought that an old lady had pushed this young guy to the floor. They did not realise Martin was a man because of the way he was dressed and the fact that he is small. So why does Wing Chun work for blind people?
