Nine Section Whip Pt 4

The 9 Section Whip is one of the more advanced forms and it requires quite a lot of coordination. You have to keep the whip swinging while you turn and walk back and forth
Another eagerly awaited seminar on the 9 Section Whip. The lecture this time covered the whole of the Chun Yuen syllabus and how progressing through the forms develops your skill and your ability to adapt to all kinds of different weapons. Most importantly developing these skills is good for our health, and the more different skills we learn, the more benefit we get. Sifu also talked about the skill ancestors and which forms are attributed to Wang Ping or Wu Ren and which ones come from other traditions, like Wudang sword.
The 9 Section Whip is one of the more advanced forms and it requires quite a lot of coordination. You have to keep the whip swinging while you turn and walk back and forth, luckily we are using a rope with a tennis ball on the end as a whip so that when it goes wrong there are no injuries! The first moves are quite familiar now but as the form goes on it gets more challenging so it’s great that we get to polish the form from the beginning each time, so that we can get the whole form to flow.
All new forms are enjoyable to learn but this form is really a lot of fun as it is such an unusual weapon and will require developing a different kind of coordination to master. Thank you for sharing all of these skills with us Sifu.

Changing the hands at the end between the front and the back circle will need some practice, especially then changing the hands a second time behind the back! Just as I thought the rest of the form was starting to take shape as well… Thanks Sigong for passing on such a gem! Lee B

It was another enjoyable session for the fourth part of the Nine-Section Whip course. There are some tricky bits, but as usual there were some great tips in the breakout rooms. The Whip is becoming more familiar now, but I think it will still be a while before I try it with the metal whip! Thank you Sigong. Peter Hogg

Interesting lecture on the levels of Chun Yuen, explains how some of the new forms fit in. The new part is tricky to catch directions of body and whip! But the earlier parts feel more comfortable now. Looking forward to some more brain challenges! Thank you Sigong. Christine

Great to continue the 9 section whip today! Interesting lecture on the different levels of the Chun Yuen system and which types of forms would be good for a rounded Chun Yuen profile. Technique seems to be improving as evidenced by the decrease in auto-flagellation. Looking forward to learning more next time. Thank you, Sigong. Best, Tom Hogg

The 9 section whip is always an enjoyable practice. Some bits are starting to get a bit trickier but always fun and a good time, especially in the practice rooms. Can’t wait to get to the next seminar. Andrew O.

Very good coordination practice. This kind of playful but demanding practice must be a key component in keeping the mind and body young.
Thank you, Sigong.

Sifu, thank you for this seminar. The whip is such an interesting weapon. When it flows, it feels great! When it doesn’t…. I am finding this a fascinating weapon and form. So glad I have started with the ball and rope though! Looking forward to the next seminar. Peter W

Thank you for today’s seminar Sigong. Great Chun Yuen form challenging on our body and mind still far from flowing. Better understanding of the orientation and whip rotation, still too early of thinking of practicing on the real 9 section whip! Michalis A.

It is good to see the different levels and how we can achieve them and also the lineage. The new section is quite difficult but it was good to go through all parts again as that helps with the momentum and how to move the whip. Looking forward to better understand it. Thank you Sifu
