Nine Section Whip Pt 9

GM Tse then continued to teach the 9 section whip. We were fortunate that he had his heavy metal whip and could illustrate that stepping properly is important so that you use the whole body when you control the whip.
It was great to continue the nine section whip seminar series today. Despite the weather being cold and dreary outside, I now feel warm and energised. GM Tse started the seminar with a lecture on the different parts of the body that can be used for striking in Chun Yuen. They are listed below:

1 fist: front, above, below, inside, outside
2 elbow
3 shoulders
4 chest, front
5 back
6 head (use the top)
7 hip
8 knee, legs: right, left, front
9 foot: toes with shoes, heel, sole, outside, inside

So almost any part of the body can be used to strike, but it must be conditioned beforehand. Striking, however, is only one part of fighting, as other skills like pulling, pushing, qin na, and more are needed as well.

GM Tse then continued to teach the 9 section whip. We were fortunate that he had his heavy metal whip and could illustrate that stepping properly is important so that you use the whole body when you control the whip. The ball and string training replicas that most of us are using are very forgiving if you make a mistake, but that is not the case with the real thing! At the end we learnt a new movement where the whip is swung while being held under the armpit. To date I have to say that, for me personally, this particular movement has the highest score on the facial emodeling scale. Not something I plan to attempt with the real whip anytime soon. Thank you, Sigong, for sharing this amazing skill with us. Looking forward to more swinging of sharp objects at high speed next time!
