Daoist Lǚ Dòng Bīn 呂洞賓

Part 10

Lǚ Yán 呂嚴 was so scared seeing three tigers in front of him. His Sīfú 師父 – teacher, Zhōng Lí Quán 鐘離權 was standing next to him and showed no concern at all, so Lǚ Yán tried to control his fear. He thought, “How could Sīfú keep three tigers? They could attack him!” Whilst he was thinking, Zhōng Lí Quán suddenly shouted at the tigers, “You need to treat Lǚ Yán well, he is my student and will stay here for a while. So be nice to him!” The three tigers attitude immediately changed and they lowered their heads, they seemed to understand what their master had said, and they gently walked either side of the front door.

Lǚ Yán was surprised. They tigers were just like pet cats, and they seemed to actually like people and understand what his Sīfú had said to them. The tigers left a path for Lǚ Yán and, Zhōng Lí Quán to go into the house. Lǚ Yán realised that the tigers were guarding the house, and this made his respect his Sīfú even more. He could not believe that anyone could make tigers into their guard-dogs! This meant that his Sīfú must have a very good Daoist skill. Lǚ Yán followed Zhōng Lí Quán in to the house.
