Wú Wǒ Xiāng 無我相

Part 1

In Buddhism, there is one sutra which is very popular and most Buddhists will study it. It is called the Jīngāng Jīng 金剛經 – Diamond Sutra. There is one sentence in the Diamond Sutra that people will read time and again. It is,

無 我 相、 無人 相、 無 眾 生 相、 無 壽者 相,
Wú Wǒ Xiāng, Wú Rén Xiāng, Wú Zhòng Shēng Xiāng, Wú Shòu Zhě Xiāng,

“No self, no other people, no other living things, no life.”

It means that at a high level there is nothing, and we use this principle in meditation when we go very deep, this is Wú Wǒ Xiāng 無我相. Wú 無 means no. Wǒ 我 means myself and Xiāng 相 means face. Literally it means, self, no face. If we do not have a face then it means we are gone, we are no longer here, and we are nothing. When we are meditating, if we want to go into a deep meditation we need to let go and forget everything, even ourselves, so we do not have a face, we are not a person, we are not here and so we have gone. If we can do this, then we can see the true us, see our true potential, see what we can truly be, like a kind person or a wise person. So, we can do the things we should be able to do whether it is studying, or career, finding the right love, healing or helping others and many other things.
