In Chinese Culture we have two calendars. One is the Bái Dào 白道 or Bái Lì 白曆. Bái 白means white. Dào 道 is like in Daoism and means way , road or path. Lì 曆 means calendar. So Bai Dao is White Way and Bai Li is White calendar. This is the lunar calendar as the colour of the moon, in the night’s sky is white. The Bai Dao or Bai Li follows the cycle of the moon. The New Moon is the beginning of the cycle and in the Chinese Lunar calendar, the Full Moon is on the 15th day. We have to adjust the days for the rest of the moon’s cycle. Chinese New Year is the first cycle of the Moon and so falls on the first New Moon, and this is why, when compared to the Western calendar, it is different each year. The Western calendar matches the second Chinese calendar, the Huáng Dào 黃道 or Huáng Lì 黃曆. Huáng 黃 means yellow, like in Huáng Dì 黃帝 – Yellow Emperor. So it means Yellow Path or Yellow Calendar. This follows the sun as the sun is yellow.
