28 Constellations
Part 5
Over 3000 years ago, during the Xī Zhōu 西周 – Western Zhōu Dynasty(1046 BC – 771BC), China had already created a system for the sky and all the stars. They created the Sān Yuán 三垣 – Three Enclosures, Sì Shòu 四獸 – Four Animals, and the Èr Shí Bā Xiù 二十八宿 – 28 Constellations. The Three Enclosures is made of of three parts. The first, Zǐ Wēi Yuán 紫微垣, is the palace. The second, Tài Wēi Yuán 太微垣 is the government, and Tiān Shì Yuán 天市垣 which is the activity of the country. This means the ancient Chinese saw the sky as being the same as the Earth. There was an emperor, government and citizens who were all active in the sky, which they referred to as heaven.
The four animals we have already talked about and they are the Cānglóng 蒼龍 – Green Dragon,Xuánwǔ 玄武 – Black Tortoise and Snake,Báihǔ 白虎 – White Tiger and the Zhūquè 朱雀 – Red Phoenix. The Four Animals cover and guard the four directions of the country in heaven. Each animal has 7 constellations and so there are 28 constellations.
