28 Constellations

Part 13

After the Northern Xuánwǔ 玄武  (Black Tortoise and Snake) we come to the West and the Xī Fāng Bái Hǔ 西方白虎 – Western White Tiger. The cycle of the 28 Constellations is anticlockwise, going from the Eastern Green Dragon to the Northern Black Tortoise and Snake, to the Western White Tiger then the Southern Red Pheonix. Although it appears the 28 Constellations rotate round, they do not, it is the Earth that rotates clockwise, making the 28 Constellations look as if they rotate anticlockwise.

The seven constellations of the Western White Tiger are: Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, Shen奎婁胃昂畢觜參. In traditional Chinese culture, the Tiger is very powerful, and we use it a lot in Kung Fu, in styles like Hóng Quán 洪拳. The famous master Huáng Fēi Hóng 黃飛鴻, whose character has appeared in many movies was famous for his Tiger and Crane – Hǔ Hè Shuāng Xíng  虎鶴雙形, which are two animals in Hóng Quán Form. The Tiger 虎

(Fu ) represents power, and the Crane 鶴 (Hok) represents softness. The Wester White Tiger relates to power or war and military.
