28 Constellations

Part 19

The last animal in the 28 Constellations is the Nán Fāng Zhū Què 南方朱雀 – Southern Red Pheonix. There are seven constellations in the South. The constellations start in the east from the Dōngfāng Qīnglóng 東方青龍 – Eastern Green Dragon, then the Běifāng Xuánwǔ 北方玄武 – Northern Snake & Turtle, then the Xī Fāng Bái Hǔ 西方白虎 – Western White Tiger and lastly the Nán Fāng Zhū Què 南方朱雀 – Southern Red Pheonix and the constellations turn anticlockwise.

The seven constellations of the Nán Fāng Zhū Què 南方朱雀 – Southern Red Pheonix are: Jǐng 井, Guǐ 鬼, Liǔ 柳, Xīng 星, Zhāng 張, Yì 翼, Zhěn 軫.

Zhū 朱 means red and Què雀 means bird, however in the context of the 28 Constellations we say it is a Pheonix, since we already have a dragon in the east. In Chinese culture, the dragon and phoenix are a couple, the king is a symbolised by a dragon and the queen symbolised by a phoenix. The seven constellations represent a culture, a society, or any group of people living together for a certain period of time, and so they represent their own way of living in that area. The manner in which they live gradually becomes their culture, for example, they have they way in which they eat, their own kind of entertainment, their own kind of education, etc. So, Southern Red Pheonix represents the Chinese culture of old, back in time and the way they lived, educated themselves, entertained themselves and their system of law and order.
