Teaching Seniors and Juniors

When you are a Sīfú 師父 – Teacher, you will have senior and junior students, and we will teach them in a different way. When teaching juniors, we will teach them a small part of the movements and not give them too much. We need to let them feel as if they can learn and pick it up, and that it is not too difficult. This is enough as they will enjoy it and continue to learn from you. When they start to ask more questions, then you can go deeper into the skill. The most important thing is for beginners and juniors to enjoy learning from you.

Now seniors are more committed, and so they are not just learning forms. They want to go deeper to discover and understand the deep meaning behind the movements and this excites them. For example, a senior asked me about the movement, Number 46 movement “Rotate the Qì Ball 揉球”, in the Wild Goose 1st 64. They asked why the upper and lower hands move differently. I explained that the upper arm the elbow is out and so this works with the Yang Channels and moves much more. The lower hand, the elbow is in and so it cannot move as much and is for the Yin Channels. This is a deeper explanation, but for the juniors, it is good enough that they can rotate the Qì ball with their hands.
