Which Form to Practise?
Part 1
On cold winter mornings, it is very easy to be lazy. When we get up in the morning, look outside, and see that it is cold and grey, it is easy to think that maybe we can skip this morning’s practice. I have had the same feeling; however, I force myself to go outside, start to stretch, and once the fresh air reaches my lungs, I start to feel better and begin to enjoy my practice.
I think the hardest thing is going outside to begin with, but once you are outside, you will carry on with your practice. This is how we begin our day, and when we do it, we feel much better and full of energy. I think everybody is like this.
My Sifu, Great Grandmaster Yáng Méijūn 楊梅君, used to say something that was very true: “The more you feel you do not want to practise, the more you need it at that time.”
One of my senior students Peter Andersen, who is an instructor, was asked by his students which forms they should practise first. He told them to warm up. This was a very good answer, as we all know the Level 1 Warm-Up and we do it every time in class. It is not even counted as part of our practice, but when we start to warm up, we will want to do more. Then we can do our Balancing Gōng, Dàyàn Qìgōng 大雁氣功 (Wild Goose Qìgōng), or even Xíng Shǒu 行手 (Style Hand).
