The Benefits of Standing on One Leg
Part 1
If you have attended my classes or seminars, you may have heard me say, “Standing on one leg can help prevent having a stroke.” One of my senior students asked me why.
All Qìgōng 氣功 is based on Qì 氣. Qì is a major element of our lives because, without it, we cannot live. It is like the battery in a car. Without a battery, the car will not start. Qì is therefore very important, and all other things, such as food, air, our environment and exercise, help to supply or build up our Qì.
Of course, the most important thing is air. As air provides us with most of our Qì, it is important that it is of good quality, not simply fresh oxygen. Good Qì comes from nature — the sky, the stars, the earth, trees, mountains, rivers and many other aspects of the natural world. These are all beneficial to human beings, providing energy and helping to build up our Qì.
When we stand on one leg, we naturally become more alert and focused because, if we do not pay attention, we will lose our balance. While standing on one leg, our Qì flows strongly throughout the body, and any problems we may have receive more Qì, which helps the body to correct and repair them.
