The Benefits of Standing on One Leg

Part 3

I always say that having a stroke is one of the worst illnesses because it means other people may have to look after us. We may not be able to do basic things such as going to the toilet, bathing or even eating without assistance.

Standing on one leg every day can help to reduce the likelihood of having a stroke. It is part of life that one day we will die. The best outcome is to pass away peacefully, without illness, or to simply go in our sleep without becoming a burden to others. If we are ill, we practise Qìgōng 氣功 to help heal ourselves. If our Qìgōng reaches a high level, we may even know when our time is approaching. We may be sitting quietly or sleeping and simply know that it is time to go naturally. This is not something that can be forced.

Standing on both legs helps to build up our Qi, but standing on one leg challenges the body in a different way and can provide additional benefits. Some people also practise handstands for similar reasons. However, we cannot guarantee that any exercise will completely prevent a stroke. What we can say is that these practices help to improve balance, circulation, awareness and the flow of Qi throughout the body.

In the end, the more Qì we have, the healthier we will be and when we reach a high level we can go naturally.
