When we want to gather more Qì, a male will put their left hand so the Láogōng point is close to, or touching the Dāntián, and ladies will do the opposite.

Right Hand for Ladies, Left Hand for Men

When I teach students Qìgōng 氣功 and particularly in the Balancing Gong, I tell them men should put their left hand over their Dāntián 丹田 and the right hand over the top of it, so the Láogōng 勞宮 points connect with the Dāntián. Ladies should put their right hand on the Dāntián and the left hand over the right hand. Many people ask why?

When we are in the mother’s womb, a boy’s Qì will start to flow from the left side and a girl’s will flow from the right. Therefore, the left side for males relates to their Prenatal Energy and the right their Postnatal Energy. The right side for females relates to their Prenatal Energy and the left is their Postnatal Energy.

When we want to gather more Qì, a male will put their left hand so the Láogōng point is close to, or touching the Dāntián, and ladies will do the opposite. How do we know whether this is right or not? Once, one of my male Qìgōng students did it the wrong way round and put his right hand inside, and when he practised like this, it did not feel right. Our feelings will actually tell us the right answer. However, it does not mean that a man cannot put their right hand on the Dāntián, and ladies cannot put their left hand on the Dāntián. If men put their right hand inside, then they will develop the gentle or female energy, and the opposite for ladies. It is better to develop our Prenatal Energy first, then the Postnatal Energy.
