This year’s course had almost 50 students and many first-time attendees who were joining online from Australia. We had students from the UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Lithuania, USA and Australia. A very international spread! We also had a new venue to get used to.
Grandmaster Tse started the course by greeting and welcoming everyone and then pointing out the aims of the course. The most important aspect is to improve ourselves, our skill, knowledge and to understand what it means to be a Tse Qigong Centre Instructor. Everyone who attends is invited by their Sifu after having trained for at least three years and have shown they are more involved than just turning up to classes. It means that they have the right heart.
We then moved onto the first test, which is a verbal exam where the students must answer questions to show their understanding of Wing Chun, what it means to be a Sifu, and Centre admin. This is quite demanding, as the topics covered are wide ranging, but as Grandmaster Tse said, it is to help them become a good Sifu and be called a “Master” by others. Everyone did very well and only a few had to retest this, but they all quickly passed.
The next part of the course Grandmaster Tse demonstrated and answered question on Warm Ups, Siu Lim Tao, Dan (Single) Chi Sau, Seung (Double) Chi Sau and Tsum Kiu. After each demonstration students were able to join different groups, lead by a senior instructor, to polish and work on what had been shown. This was quite intense but very enjoyable, and students were all a good standard to being with and so it was a case of refining their skill, knowledge and explanations. This took up the bulk of the day, but the final 45 minutes was given over to Chi Sau where everyone could just relax and enjoy training with each other. To make sure the online students did not feel left out, they were given a tour of the group stopping to watch various partners as they Chi Sau’d together.
With the first day all wrapped up, it was time for Grandmaster Tse’s Birthday Party! Everyone was very hungry and was looking forward to a good Chinese meal and they were not disappointed! Imperial China in Teddington has become our after-seminar spot for a few years now and we have got to know them well and they really look after us! When we arrived Grandmaster Tse was greeted by a chorus of Happy Birthday wishes from all the staff. There were a lot of us, as not only the students from the course were there, but other students from classes and came and brought their family and friends. The food was delicious, with Cantonese Roast Duck, Crispy Chicken (Gar Gee Gai), braised pork and persevered vegetable (Moi Choi Kau Yuk), Salt and Pepper Squid, Kai Lan and garlic sauce, Vegetarian Pei Pai Tofu, steamed egg, Vegetable Hotpot, and more! A true banquet! Then, after so much food came two amazing birthday cakes (one was gluten-free) made by the very talented Gosia. Every year she amazes us with the cake making skill and for Sifu’s Birthday she really went to town! And of course, we all sang a very loud and cheerful “Happy Birthday to You!” to Grandmaster Tse. I know Sifu is happy when everyone around him is happy and we all had a fantastic time!
The following day the Instructor Course continued, and we started with a group photo, and then it was on to the testing. The testing schedule is all timetabled out and so everyone knows who and what time they are being tested. This allows everyone to focus and polish more between their tests. With so many people, there was a lot going on in the hall, but everyone is quite used to the routine and so I think the testers, as they were so busy, were more sweating more than those they were testing! Everyone did very well and a special mention has to go to those people online who stayed up to the early hours to attended! I hope they have all caught up with their sleep. Again, the final 45 minutes was left for Chi Sau and time to relax after the rigors of the day.
There are many things that make up a good Sifu. The Tse Qigong Centre focuses on teaching traditional Chinese skill in the correct way to preserve the skill and pass it on in the right way. There are many people in the world who like to jump from teacher to teacher collecting skill and then start teaching it. These people only want skill and do not truly respect the teacher. To be a good teacher, you must begin with being a good student. This takes time, but only with time will you build a good relationship based on trust and respect. Then you will make a positive influence on everything around you.
