Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 478

The toes of the front foot should point straight ahead and the front foot should form a straight line to the back heel. The feet and the line between them make a half arrow shape.

Advanced Level of Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步 - Ten Star Footwork

Part 12

To practise Jeun Máh 進馬 – Forward Step, we first start by doing Hōi Máh 開馬 – Opening Stance and make our Yìh Jih Kìhm Yèuhng Máh 二字鉗羊馬 – Basic Wing Chun Stance. We then step forwards with either foot, the back foot will open 45 degrees, so the toes point outwards. The toes of the front foot should point straight ahead and the front foot should form a straight line to the back heel. The feet and the line between them make a half arrow shape and the distance between the heels is still the same as your shoulder width, just like in Yìh Jih Kìhm Yèuhng Máh (to check, we can turn the front foot in, turning it on the heel to make Yìh Jih Kìhm Yèuhng Máh and the distance should be correct, and then turn the front back out.) This is the Wing Chun footwork position and the upper body is turned about 45 degrees.

If we step forwards with the right foot first, then the right foot and right shoulder should be in line, right hand at the front with elbow bends and loose fist, The left hand is a Wu Sau and is not at the centre of the chest, more to the right side of the chest, but not too much. We need to feel comfortable and not twisted. The Wu Sau should be in front of the chest at the same distance as the right elbow. This is the best position for preparing to punch. We then quickly extend the right foot forwards and quickly drag up the left foot behind it, catching the correct shoulder width distance and punch forwards with the right fist.
