Advanced Level of Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步

Part 13
When we practise Jeun Máh 進馬 – Forward Step and punch, we can use our full power. We almost fully extend our arm, and this depends on whether you will hurt your elbow or shoulder. If it hurts, just stop it and then try again punching more gently, but if not then you can use full power. However power is not so important right now as we are not training the punch at this moment but we are training to Jeun Máh with the punch, and they should match together so your timing is very important. When your timing is right the power of every punch comes from the Jeun Máh, making it very powerful. We can step and punch many times, for example, you could take five steps and then we can use Jyún Máh 轉馬 – Turning Stance, to turn 180° with the heels and then we can continue stepping back the way we came and train our punch at the same time, so in this way we can go back and forth many, many times. When we change to go back the other direction, the other foot will now be at the front and so we can train the other hand, for example, if we started with the right foot and right punch in front, and then turn 180°, we should now have the left foot in front, and so we will train the left punch. After this we can then also use the other hand so we are using both hands to punch. so, following our example, we have our right foot in front. We will punch with a right fist, and then with the next step we will punch with the left but the Jeun Mah is still right foot at the front, so we now alternate the hands when stepping. However, we will find that the opposite hand is not as powerful as the leading side, so if the right foot is in front and we punch with the left fist, then this is not as powerful, only about 50%, as punching with the right fist. This is because in this position we cannot fully transfer the power of the leg to the punch, but in certain situations we will need to use the hand opposite to the leg to attack.

The hardest part of the training is holding the leg up and keeping the position. As we get tired, the leg will start to drop.

When we kick, we do not just consider the kicking leg; we need to maintain our balance and not move the upper body very much.
