Advanced Level of Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步 - Ten Star Footwork
Part 18
Once we have finished the first Teui Máh 退馬 – Backward Step, we can continue training, but remember the application is just one step back, we are only repeating it for training. We move our front foot back about 45 degrees on the other side, so that it become the back foot, we contact the ground with the toes first and then shift onto the heel as we transfer our weight back on to it, then we drag the front foot back to form the Jeun Máh 進馬 position. If we are using two Wuh Sáu 護手 – Guarding Hands, then we cycle them around as we step back. The hand coming back circles under the hand going forwards, which is opposite to how we train the normal Wing Chun punches, and this is because to do it this way whilst moving backwards interrupts the flow the movement. It is like a car’s wheels, if the car goes forwards the wheels will roll forwards, and it goes backwards, the wheel will roll backwards. This is normal. Now we can keep repeating Teui Máh, going back in a zig zag. However, we must always remember to be aware of what is behind us whenever we are fighting or training.
