Advanced Level of Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步 - Ten Star Footwork
Part 19
When we are training Teui Máh 退馬 – Backward Step and walking backwards in a zigzag, we consider this to be just taking one step backwards at a 45 degree angle. But when we are training, we just keep repeating the step, in order to cover both sides. However, we can also take multiple steps backwards, so we can take one, two or three steps back, it all depends on our opponent’s movement. If they keep attacking us then we do Teui Máh, but the rule is we should not take more than three steps backwards. If we keep stepping back more than three steps, then our opponent will catch us, as moving forward is quicker than moving backwards. However, I mean we are continually moving backwards, not taking one when the opposition takes one step, then another and so on. This is all right as this means we step back to avoid their attack as they take a step forwards. If they stop, then we stop also and wait for an opportunity to hit back, or if we just want to stop things getting worse. However, if the opponent keeps attacking and moving towards us, we should attack back after the third step as they will not be expecting this.
