Advanced Level of Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步 - Ten Star Footwork
Part 21
In the first method of training the small multiple Teui Máh 退馬 – Backward Step, we keep curving back in the direction of the back foot and keep the front foot at the front, never crossing our feet over as this is dangerous. Remember we are taking a small step and so our opponent is still fairly close to us. When we are training we can take more than three steps and just keep stepping back and curving around. But in application we must not take more than three steps.
The second way of training the multiple Teui Máh is using a big step backwards. It might be the opponent’s is tall and has long arms and so we need to make more space. In this situation we can step back with the front foot as much as we want and then drag what was the back leg, as it now becomes front leg, to shoulder width distance. This means our feet swap over. This time we step back in a straight line, often one big step can be enough to avoid their attack, and as before the hands will rotate underneath with the front hand matching the front leg. If we still need a second step, we can keep stepping and swapping the feet and the hands around, but as before we should not take more than three steps backwards.
