Advanced Level of Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步 - Ten Star
Part 22
We all know that the main application of Teui Máh 退馬 – Backward Step is defensive as we step away to avoid our opponent’s attack. We will only step back, three steps at most, and then attack back. When we do attack back, we can use as much power as we want as the opponent will not be expecting it, as you have been avoiding their strength.
We can also use Teui Máh to attack. The most common situation is when an opponent is moving in behind to attack us. Now we can suddenly step back into them and use Hauh Jāang 後踭 – Backward Elbow, to strike them. If we time it well, they will not notice, and the technique will be very effective. Of course, this means that you know they are going to try to attack you before they do, but as martial artists, we must be aware of everything around us. This is particularly important if you are in an enclosed area or somewhere unsafe. Another situation might be when someone grabs your arm and pulls you backwards. Now you need to step back and use Hauh Yan Jeung 後印掌 to shake off their hand, and now you can attack them.
