Yāt Geuk Jōng 一脚樁

Part 1

In Wing Chun, we have Sahp Sīng Bouh 十星步 (Ten Star Footwork). The first star we all know is Yìh Jih Kìhm Yèuhng Máh 二字鉗羊馬 (Basic Wing Chun Stance). The second is Yāt Geuk Jōng 一脚樁 (One Leg Stance). We need to train standing on one leg to train our balance and make us strong enough for kicking. If we cannot balance on one leg, then we should not try and kick. Training Yāt Geuk Jōng 一脚樁 prepares us for kicking, as we get older if becomes harder for us to keep our balance on leg. When we kick, we do not just consider the kicking leg; we need to maintain our balance and not move the upper body very much, and this is important, as in Wing Chun we do not kick above the waist.

Why do we only kick below the waist? This is because when we kick high, if our opponent kicks our standing leg, and we will be immediately defeated and so it is all over. Also, in Wing Chun, we like to use both hands and the leg at the same time, which means we need to be very close to them, and so it is not good to kick high. In these kinds of positions, it is best to kick low, when our arms and hands are controlling the opponent. Then we are safer, and our kicks will be more powerful.
