Wing Chun Weekend

This Wing Chun weekend was a profound learning experience—a deep dive into the ancient martial art of Wing Chun. It was a gathering of both familiar and new faces, all united in their pursuit of learning and mastery. Wing Chun is a discipline rooted in sensitivity, energy flow, and precision, and the seminar provided a rare opportunity to immerse ourselves fully in its philosophy and practice.

Each session was carefully crafted, ensuring that every lesson built upon the previous one. Our esteemed Sifu guided us with great depth, offering insights beyond what could be found in books—wisdom born of lived experience. The weekend began with warm-ups, a moment to centre the mind and relax the body, preparing us for the intricate movements that would follow. One of the most valuable aspects of the seminar was the practice of Chi Sau, the sticking hands technique, which allowed us to refine our ability to read and respond to energy. Practicing with fellow Wing Chun practitioners was a privilege, each exchange sharpening skill and deepening understanding.

The first day was devoted to stances—a fundamental aspect of Wing Chun that teaches balance, control, and readiness. We explored single- and double-leg stances, understanding not only how to perform them, but how to integrate them seamlessly into combat situations. Though I have studied Wing Chun for years, there was always something new to discover, and the seniors provided patient and invaluable guidance.

On the second day, we shifted focus to kicks—one of the many powerful techniques in Wing Chun. The extended kick and sidekick were studied in depth, revealing the subtleties of generating force while maintaining fluidity. Unlike in some martial arts where sheer power is emphasized, here we learned to follow the opponent’s energy, channelling it to make every movement more effective. As someone with a smaller frame, this understanding was especially helpful in refining my technique.

Beyond the physical aspects, there was a beautiful sense of community throughout the seminar. We celebrated the birthday of one of our seniors, a reminder that martial arts is not just about skill—it is about unity, respect, and lifelong learning. The gathering exemplified the spirit of Wing Chun: perseverance, wisdom, and growth.

I am deeply grateful to Sifu for his generous teachings and to my fellow practitioners for their patience and camaraderie. The weekend was not only a lesson in martial arts but also in discipline, humility, and connection. I eagerly look forward to future sessions, knowing that each will bring new layers of insight and refinement.

Wing Chun is more than a practice—it is a way of life, and this seminar was a reminder of why the journey is so meaningful.

For myself personally, this was one of the most informative seminars I’ve attended. The amount of knowledge that I gained today was incredible. All of my seniors were just so patient and helpful and always willing to take the time to help understand the technique, application etc. It was so nice to be able to Chi Sau with my Kung fu brothers and sisters and everyone was so happy. We all enjoyed wishing Christine a very happy Birthday.
TaiSigong answered all questions, and everyone was grateful for the knowledge he imparted. I wish there could have been another 2 days. I’m looking forward to practicing the kicking techniques. Thank you so much to everyone who made this such an informative and enjoyable weekend. Eric Paule

Sifu, thank you for another great seminar. It was great to practice 10 star footwork and the kicking. Thanks again and I look forward to the next one. Peter W

This is why I miss in person seminars so much, what a great weekend we had! Chi Sau, three of the ten star footwork techniques, three of the 24 kicking techniques, birthday cake, great food, and chance to catch up with everyone and be together like a family. Thanks Sigong for arranging this for us all!

Thankyou TaiSigong for organising the Wing Chun weekend, I had a fantastic time and learned so many new things. It was great to catch up and Chi Sau with everyone again. Good to go over some of the 10 star footwork to refresh name, meaning, training and application of the first 3 stars. It was great to look at the kicking techniques in detail. Thankyou to all the seniors who patiently explained different aspects of Chi Sau and how to improve. I have alot to think about and practice! It was great to celebrate my Sifu Christine’s birthday with everyone. Thankyou, Rod.

Thank you Sigong for a great w/e seminar! It is so nice when we come together and learn.
I loved the detail of the 10 star footwork and kicking techniques. It shows the necessity of practicing more the kicks and the one leg stance to improve balance and train the power in the legs waist and hips. Enjoyed meeting and chi sau with everyone having great dinner and cake. As you already mentioned I look forward to touching hand day in December! Michalis A.

It was a very in-depth experience that reminded me of the importance of footwork and position when it comes to Chi Sau and kicking. Also a great time to chi sau with a lot of Centre students and learn and readjust my approach and energy to chi sau. Thank you Sifu!
